Kid me never did anything she would have considered dangerous, edgy or wrong. Kid-Nic played by the rules, at all times.
When I was 13, I had a bunch of friends over for a sleepover. It was your typical sleepover…we gorged ourselves on 2-for-1 pizza and listened to Nirvana while thumbing through back-editions of Sassy magazine.
Except for one thing: our friend Bean brought over an Ouija board.
For most of the night, I successfully stalled and distracted my friends from the Ouija Board Box sitting in the corner of the rec room.
No one ever told me not to play with a Ouija board. But it just felt wrong to me. Who were we to be bugging spirits? What if we pissed the spirits off and they haunted our dreams or broke our dual-cassette stereos?
But, peer pressure is a mighty thing and the next thing I knew I was sitting in my parent’s pitch-black rec room with my hands on the plastic planchette.
My friends started asking it questions. I can’t remember what they were but it was enough to peak my curiosity.
So I asked it who I would marry.
The planchette slowly moved from B to U to R.
I freaked out. My stomach did an elevator dive and I burst into a fit of shrieks and giggles.
B-U-R was the first 3 letters of the last name of theboy I had a long held crush on.
The rest of the night was a blur. Nothing else mattered…all I knew is that I was going to marry my (very unrequited) crush and that was that.
I probably had our entire wedding planned before daybreak.
But alas, it was not meant to be.
The boy in question evolved into one of my very best guy buds.
But fast forward the clock 11 years and I’m walking down the aisle towards my J.
The first 3 letters of his last name?
